The 60-carbon cage-like molecule is known as buckminsterfullerene, or “buckyball.” With facets made up of hexagons and pentagons of carbon atoms, it looks like a soccer ball (a truncated icosahedron), recapitulating the geodesic dome architecture at the molecular level. (The three scientists shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1996 for the discovery of fullerenes.)
